Difference between blue and green screens

Often, the question arises about how to use blue or green chroma to work comfortably during a shoot and avoid surprises during post-production. In this post, we tell you about the difference between blue and green screens and how to choose the most suitable chroma key for working.

What is a green or blue chroma key screen?

A blue chroma key or green are monochromatic backgrounds and screens intended to be used in shoots where special effects will be applied later using chroma key or Chroma Key technique.

Blue and green are colors that are not present in human skin tones and, therefore, are very easy to remove or extract from an image through the use of the chroma key digital editing technique.

Previously, when working with analog cameras, it was much more common to work with a blue screen, due to the way they were able to capture colors, but the green screen has gained greater popularity as video recording with digital cameras has diversified.

Both screens have their advantages and disadvantages; below we tell you some general aspects for shooting with blue and green screens.

How to use blue or green chroma key in shoots?

A production with special effects would not be possible without the help of a blue or green chroma. Therefore, it is important to consider some general aspects to know when it is more appropriate to use one or the other.

Colors in clothing and hair

One of the most important aspects that determine which screen is more appropriate to shoot with is the color present in the actors’ clothing. It is necessary to avoid actors in the frame having clothes or details of the same color as the background, as they will disappear or have a translucent effect when the Chroma key effect is applied. Therefore, if it is contemplated that the character has to wear blue or green, it is important to use the opposite background color for the shoot.

The hair color tone of the actor or actress must also be taken into account since, depending on the “color bleed” that the chroma tone makes, it will be reflected to a greater or lesser extent. For example, in shoots with blonde-haired people, it is preferable to use a blue screen, as it will reflect much less than on a green chroma, where it can create a translucent effect on the contour.

Lighting

A difference between blue and green screens significant is the lighting. Depending on the needs of the shoot, one color will be much more suitable than the other. For example, the blue screen can be much more useful when scenes need to be shot where not much light is needed. For everything else, either color is suitable.

Environment and exteriors

For shoots, it is important to consider the recording environment. That is, if it is a studio or a chroma set, it will be necessary to primarily assess using adequate lighting and avoid actors using costumes of the same color as the chroma. But if it is contemplated to perform an outdoor shoot, the blue screen is the most suitable to contrast with vegetation, and the green chroma is the most appropriate option when there are water elements in the environment.
