The importance of acoustics when choosing a recording studio

The first question that clients repeatedly ask in any recording studio is: how’s the sound on the set? Is it soundproofed? Is the studio isolated? Indeed, acoustics is a fundamental pillar in any project that requires sound recording. In today’s post, we tell you about the importance of acoustics for a recording studio and, especially, what you should consider when choosing a set for recording.

The most common acoustic problems

There are two main sound-related problems: the reverberation of sound or acoustic contamination due to lack of room isolation. Both problems are, to a greater or lesser extent, incompatible with quality sound recording. But we have good news: both have solutions.

For the first problem, the solution is quicker and cheaper; you only need absorbent materials to ensure the acoustic quality of the studio and prevent the diffusion of waves inside the room. Moreover, this technique doesn’t require construction work.

For the problem of lack of isolation, things get more complicated. The room should have been conceived from the beginning as a studio and isolated during construction. But in most cases, especially in big cities, studios are found in rooms converted into recording studios. This implies more money and effort in isolating the room, or in some cases, it’s not even an option to consider as permits cannot be obtained for it. To all this, we could add an additional problem; in some multipurpose studios, we can find other sources of their own sound, such as those from machines, or people talking in the adjacent space.
