Advantages of a studio with DMX-controlled lighting

DMX is a universal protocol used by most lighting console manufacturers as a means of communication and connection between equipment and remote controllers. These allow us to control any previously installed lighting without having to directly access it to lower the intensity, for example. In today’s article, we talk about the advantages of a studio with DMX-controlled lighting.

How to choose a DMX control console

To know if we will be able to use this type of remote control, we must consider the following factors:

  • What lights we are going to use and how many
  • If they have DMX connection
  • If they are 3-pin or 5-pin
  • How many channels each light has available
  • If we want to use each light independently or in groups

Based on these questions, we can create the DMX connection diagram. This diagram is the step prior to choosing the console to control the lighting, as it will make clear what requirements it will need to have.

Tips when connecting a console via DMX

If you want to connect a series of lights to the same console via DMX, we recommend that you connect them in a chain, that is, connect them from DMX IN to DMX OUT between them, and the last one in the chain to the console. It’s also important that you check that they don’t overlap on the same channel so you can control them independently correctly. Lastly, you need to know that if the lights have effects or are RGB, they will occupy even more channels on your console.

Advantages of controlling lighting via DMX connection

Imagine you’re going to record in a space where you’ll need to suspend or place your lights in hard-to-reach places; first, you’ll have to hang or place them all, with the necessary safety measures, then you’ll need to place all the necessary DMX and power cables, and then route them all to the console you’ve chosen. This requires prior knowledge to correctly make the connections and place the lights.

Something that might interest you is that, if the console allows it, you can create “scenes” with pre-configured lighting setups for quick and more dynamic changes.

In some cases, for example in productions that will last only a few hours, the most interesting thing is to get all this installation without having to worry and with the certainty that you will be able to access the control of each light. At AVisual STUDIOS, we offer in both our chroma studio and webcast studio in Barcelona, as well as in our M Space studio in Madrid, suspended lighting already included in the price of the space rental and connected to a DMX console that allows adjusting both power and color temperature from 0% to 100% individually.

Specifically, the webcast studio consists of 8 Cineroid FL800 bicolor LED panels, 3 of them frontal from the right, another 3 more frontal from the left, and two more panels for backlighting. And the chroma space studio has 9 Velvet Light 75w LED panels, 7 to uniformly illuminate the chroma background and 2 more frontal, plus 2 more 90w Dedolight LED lights and 2 45w ones, placed frontally and for backlighting. If you need to control more lights for your production, it’s possible to connect them to the DMX console as well to take full advantage.
