The ideal lighting for a photographic studio
If you’re going to set up your own photography studio and need to rent or buy equipment, or if you’re going to do a photo shoot in one and have doubts about the type of light you’ll need, in today’s post we’ll tell you about the ideal lighting for a photographic studio.
Types of lighting for photographic studio
To begin with, you should know the different types of lighting that exist so you can choose the one that best suits your needs:
Flash light
This type of lighting stands out for its high power. There are two types of flash lighting for photography; portable and studio flashes. The first type is versatile and compact, which makes it ideal if you need to move around, and they don’t need to be connected to the power grid. One of the advantages of these flashes is that they can be connected to each other and fired remotely, but they are not as powerful as studio flashes or other types of lights. This type of flash is more affordable in terms of price. Studio flashes are larger and more powerful than the previous ones. These lights can also be fitted with a multitude of accessories such as diffusers or gels, which will help you model the light and create the desired effects. These also synchronize remotely with your camera’s shutter. This type of flash requires a bit more investment, but they are more durable.
Continuous light
This type of lighting will allow you to have the scene illuminated at all times and the final result. This means that it allows you to check at all times how your scene is exactly illuminated. Without a doubt, the type of light source that interests you in these cases is LED, due to its low consumption and that it does not overheat as much as other sources. Nowadays, there are really economical options that offer a really bright and natural light. Some lights even have a superior color quality with CRI greater than 96, and with adjustable color temperature. It should also be taken into account that this type of lighting is heavier than studio flashes.
Essential accessories to make the most of photographic studio lighting

There are a series of essential accessories in any photo shoot. Reflector screens allow you to reflect, intensify or reduce light, and depending on the material their surface is made of, you can change the color, direction or intensity of your light source. They exist in various colors; with white and translucent ones you get a softer light and with silver or gold ones more concentration. Light windows or softboxes are used exclusively to soften and direct the light emitted by your light source. Umbrellas or umbrella reflectors are used to bounce the light from your flash to gain breadth and diffusion. Lastly, gels are sheets that are placed in front of light sources to change. Finally, we advise you to use a light meter during your session to correctly expose your photographs, to perform white balance whenever necessary, and to carefully adjust your camera’s ISO to avoid generating noise in the images and losing sharpness. If in your case you’re going to rent the photography studio, in some studios like those of AVisual in Madrid and Barcelona, the rental price already includes two studio flashes. In addition, they also offer equipment rental and photography accessories with decreasing prices and free transport, so you only have to worry about your session.
