How to remove chroma background in Adobe Premiere Pro

How to remove the Chroma Key background?

1. Create a sequence

When you have created your project in the corresponding folder, you must create a sequence with the technical characteristics you need; sequence size, number of fps… It’s important to keep in mind that, to avoid losing quality, both the source clip with the chroma background and the clip you want to put in its place should have a minimum and sufficient size.

2. Add the chroma background clip

Once your video sequence is created, add to it the video clip with the chroma background that you have previously recorded. When you do this, if the clip has different characteristics from the sequence you have created, the editing program will ask if you want to adapt it again to this clip’s configuration. It’s important that you indicate “no” to avoid losing the previous process.

3. Add the “Ultra Key” effect

Once the clip is in the sequence, and at the corresponding code point you want, you must add the “Ultra Key” effect. You’ll find this in the “Effects” window, in the video effects folder, and within this in the “keying” folder.

4. Effect configuration

Once the effect is added to the clip, in the “Effect Controls” window you can use the eyedropper tool to indicate which color you want it to automatically remove and transform into a “transparent” background.

5. Add the clip you want to appear behind

Once the effect is correctly configured, you should move your video clip up one track, and add in the lower track or “one” the clip you want to appear in place of the chroma background. Typically, the color of the first clip is corrected to give credibility to the shot. Both for the removal of the chroma background and the credibility of the resulting shot, it’s also important that you have previously correctly lit the background and the character. You should have lit the character based on the final result you want to achieve.
