What are the differences between webcast and podcast?

Since online events have become popular, we have become familiar with two key terms: webcast and podcast. Do you know their main characteristics and differences? Take advantage of the opportunities these formats offer to reach a wider audience. Consider using both in a complementary way, so that one can enhance the other. Choose the format that best suits your communication needs and objectives.

What is a podcast?

what is a podcast and what is it used for

Podcasts are exclusively pre-recorded audio content transmitted over the Internet. Being pre-recorded, it does not allow interactions with the listener.

This format is used for multiple functions, such as audiobooks, music programs, meditation… although it is always limited to one topic per broadcast and is usually divided into episodes. We recommend that it not be too extensive so that it doesn’t become too tedious.

It is an easily accessible format as it is more simplified and can be stored on any device for offline enjoyment. A great advantage is that it lacks advertising unlike other audio transmission media, such as radio. This format requires good quality audio equipment and needs editing, however little. If you don’t have this equipment, we recommend that you visit us at our podcast studio in Madrid or our podcast studio in Barcelona.

Sometimes the production of the podcasts themselves is recorded to broadcast in a complementary way and even the audio from webcasts is extracted to broadcast as podcasts.

What is a webcast?

A webcast, also called videocast, is a type of streaming. Although it is a live transmission, it can be recorded and rebroadcast at any other time, known as ‘on-demand’.

This format is undoubtedly the most versatile of the two. It is used to transmit gameplays, debates, conferences, news, talk shows, events, online classes… In addition, it allows loading multimedia, presentations, and custom designs in the same interface.

The great advantage of this format is that it allows you to reach a much larger audience, especially in these times of social distancing. It has also been shown that the level of comprehension of a user who attends a webcast is superior to that of someone who attends in person. And, most importantly, it allows the broadcaster and viewers to communicate in real-time.

what is webcast in Spanish

Combina Podcast y webcast

Webcasts and podcasts offer different and complementary ways to consume and distribute content:

Evaluate your objectives and your audience’s needs to decide the most suitable format. Both formats have the potential to significantly expand your reach and improve your users’ experience.
